When Should You Change to Winter Tyres? Expert Advice

Timing your switch to winter tyres is crucial for safety. Find out why 7 °C is the magic number, how to care for your tyres and why fitting four matching tyres matters.

In Canada’s climate, the right tyres can make the difference between gripping the road and sliding. Winter tyres are specially designed for cold conditions, but when should you make the switch?

Temperature threshold: All-season tyres begin to harden and lose traction below 7 °C. Winter tyres remain soft and grippy at low temperatures, improving braking and handling.

Timing: Install winter tyres before the first major frost. Many motorists switch when night-time temperatures consistently drop below 7 °C. Don’t wait until the first snowfall; fitting tyres early means you’re prepared for sudden cold snaps.

Install four tyres: For balanced handling and control, winter tyres should be fitted in sets of four. Mixing tyre types can cause unpredictable handling.

Tread depth and pressure: Winter tyres need at least 4 mm of tread depth to channel slush and snow. Check pressure regularly, as cold weather reduces pressure and can compromise performance.

Storage and care: Store your all-season tyres in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. Label their positions (front left/right) to rotate them properly next season.

Switching to winter tyres at the right time improves safety and reduces wear on your all-season tyres. If you’re unsure which tyres to choose, our mechanics can recommend and install the right set for your vehicle.
