Your vehicle relies on several vital fluids to run smoothly. We explain the roles of engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant, brake fluid and power steering fluid, plus when to check and top them up.

Your car relies on several fluids to operate safely and efficiently. Knowing what they do and when to check them helps you avoid breakdowns.

  • Engine oil: The lifeblood of your engine, oil lubricates moving parts, reduces friction and carries heat away. Check the dipstick regularly and change the oil according to your service schedule.

  • Transmission fluid: This fluid lubricates gears in automatic gearboxes and provides the hydraulic pressure that enables smooth shifting. Low or burnt fluid can cause hesitation or slipping.

  • Brake fluid: Brake fluid transfers the force from your foot on the brake pedal to the brake calipers. Moisture contamination reduces braking efficiency, so have the fluid flushed according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

  • Coolant/antifreeze: Coolant prevents the engine from overheating in summer and freezing in winter. It also lubricates the water pump and protects against corrosion. Check the expansion tank when the engine is cold and top up with the correct mix of antifreeze and water.

  • Power steering fluid: Power steering fluid allows you to turn the steering wheel with minimal effort. Low fluid can lead to groaning noises and heavy steering. Some newer cars use electric power steering and don’t require fluid.

  • Washer fluid: While not essential to mechanical operation, washer fluid keeps your windscreen clear of dirt, bugs and salt. Use a winter-grade fluid with antifreeze protection so it doesn’t freeze in the reservoir.

Regularly checking and topping up these fluids helps prolong the life of your vehicle. Our marketplace makes it easy to book a professional who can perform a fluid inspection and replace anything that’s low or contaminated.
